Gift elephants…

I was surprised this week to get a very cool gift in the mail.  My aunt Ann Marie sent me a pair of really cool elephant book ends.

Aren’t they gorgeous?

Black Blade Blues launch day.

2010_0415BBB_Arrival0006It’s finally arrived.  Today, I’ll be at the UW bookstore reading and signing my new book.  I’ve wanted to say that for a very long time.  Come out and visit.  7pm.  Parking in the back. :)

If I haven’t mentioned it, I have great folks in my camp.  My first readers are amazing, and pull no punches.  My agent is top notch.  And my editors at Tor are fabulous.

Most importantly, my family have been very supportive and I couldn’t have gotten where I am today without them.  You’ll get to meet them tonight as well.

Thanks everyone.  I hope you find Black Blade Blues entertaining.

Black Blade Blues featured on John Scalzi’s The Big Idea

One day until launch.  There are fireworks in my head, as you can imagine.

This morning, I’m featured in the most excellent of places: John Scalzi’s THE BIG IDEA

I’m thrilled with this. Scalzi does a good service here, allowing authors to talk about their books in their own words. Thanks, John for the opportunity.

I’m gonna need to break out the thesaurus here in a minute and look for other words for thrilled and awesome!

Don’t forget I’m on the Seattle-Geekly podcast as well.

Hey, come listen to me on Seattle-Geekly

Odd hearing myself, totally crazy.

This is too shiny.

Science Fiction Musings intereviews me.

Ann Wilkes over at Science Fiction Musings interviewed me last week.

Check it out, if you are curious about some of the things that make me tick.

Three days until book launch.  Rumor has it that Barnes & Noble has copies in the wild.

Black Blade Blues: one week and counting

2010_0415BBB_Arrival0006My books launches in exactly one week.  I can’t tell you how excited I am.  Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m a pretty stoic guy, but man, this is freaking amazing!

I’ve turned in the next book, and the brain is already churning on book 3.

I’ve dreamed of this moment since I was twelve years old.  Back then, I was writing poetry and short stories.  I didn’t tackle my first novel until I was fourteen.  It was a collaboration with my good friend, Allen Howell.  He moved away that next summer and took our unfinished manuscript with him.  It took me another twenty-five years before I’d finish a novel.

Now, one of them will be on the book shelves and ethernets of your favorite book store, all over the English speaking world.  It’s humbling and exhilarating.

To mark this auspicious occasion, I’m doing a give-away.

Post here, telling me why you want a copy of my novel (leave a good email address when you post).

2010_0206ARCS_BOOTS_MORE0013On Sunday of next week, I’ll do a random drawing and the lucky winner will receive an autographed copy of the ARC (advanced reading copy) of Black Blade Blues.  Not a lot of those out there.  Could end up being a nice collectors item, or prop up that uneven coffee table you’ve been struggling with all these years.

Since this is cross-posted I want to be clear that to enter, you need to post on my blog:  (

Hope to see some or all of you at one of my three signings.

April 27th, 7pm. UW Bookstore in the University District, Seattle, WA

May 1st, 2pm. Barnes & Noble at Crossroads mall in Bellevue, WA

May 6th, 7pm.  Powells Books, Beaverton, Oregon

Sneak Peek at Black Blade Blues

Worked 15 hours yesterday, and was dragging when I finally got home. My daughter was alseep, but my wife and son were awake. We chatted briefly, and my wife sent my son to get a package for me.

It was pretty, wrapped up in very cool foiled paper decorated with elephants, one of my favorite animals.

I opened it, and inside was a shipping package from Tor.

Guess what was inside that package.

Only 13 days until launch. I hope to see a ton of you at the reading at UW bookstore on the Ave, April 27th at 7pm.

I am joyful. :)
