Consuming story from amazing authors

There are times when I’ve finished a good book that I pause and wish with all my heart that the story wasn’t over yet, that there were a hundred more pages of wonder and delight.  Good authors do that.   They make you yearn for the world they create.  I have favorite characters that given a chance, I’d love to meet.  I know it sounds a little crazy but the way these characters are written, the emotion and beauty with which they are portrayed brings such an intense sense of joy to my life that for the briefest of moments I am content.

Carrie Vaughn is one of those authors.  I just finished reading Kitty Steals the Show , the 10th book in her wonderful series.  Carrie is a talent that speaks directly to my psyche.  I feel comfortable with her style, her characters and her story.  To me, that’s what makes her writing so appealing.  I can pick up her books and know, without hesitation, that I’m going to love what I read.  It’s like walking into the front door after a long day at work.  I belong here, I fit.  I love that about her work.

Two days ago I finished a fairly different book.  This one was Blackout, the third book in the Newsfeed trilogy by Mira Grant (or Seanan McGuire).   Here I found a similar feel.  Georgia Mason is a character I can empathize with.   I’m interested in what she has to say and how she views the world.  I’m willing to follow her on a roller-coaster ride of political intrigue,  zombie apocalypse and internet media/blogging/news.    I don’t want to live in the world Seanan created here,  but it was definitely worth the visit.  I have to say, this trilogy has been some of the best story I’ve ever experienced.

All in all I find myself well served by my book picks and very thankful to have such talented writers brave enough to share their worlds.

As a writer, I know how important that connection is.  When you hit a reader the way Carrie and Seanan have hit me, it’s something to take note of.  I’ll always seek their stuff.  Luckily, they have written more things for me to find.  Seannan’s Rosemary and Rue is sitting right next to my keyboard and Carrie’s Discord’s Apple is on the shelf above my monitor.    I know when I open those first pages I’ll be transported into a world of heart pounding adventure and truly amazing characters.

I wish I could take this feeling and bottle it for those days when work is maddening and I’m struggling with my own novels.  These author are making magic and I am loving the ride.

Go buy their books.  That way they can keep writing new ones and I’ll have plenty of things I love to read.  I’m selfish that way.
